Since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, teleworking has become established in many companies. Practiced from home in its initial form, it is now being considered in other places, called “third places”. What are these third places? Why turn to these places instead of staying at home? Here are some answers.

A definition of a third place

The expression “third place” comes from the English “the third place” which means “the third place”, in reference to the first two places which are the home and the business. The third place may be a coworking space, but it is not its only form: it can simply be a place to work from home.

The third place, an answer to the problems posed by remote working from home

While remote work is characterized by several advantages (find the article on The advantages of teleworking for the development of employees), including time and productivity gains, it is also a source of harmful effects. Difficulties in maintaining a border between professional and personal life, feelings of isolation, lack of social ties, unsuitable working conditions... these elements represent real obstacles to the smooth running of teleworking days for many. Teleworking from home thus maintains social inequalities within society.

Remote work from a third location provides an answer to the problems posed by teleworking from home. Indeed, it allows individuals to work in a structuring environment, by better ensuring their work-life balance, and it safeguards the right to disconnect. Working in a third place requires remote workers to maintain the rhythm of a traditional day at the office, benefiting from reduced travel time, a form of social connection if desired, and a perfectly adapted work environment.
