The transition to remote working by employees has caused real changes in the way we work, consume and travel. These changes are not without consequences for the environment. This is the subject that ADEME, in partnership with the State, looked at in partnership with the State, to produce TheQqf infographic (Source: INSEE, Malakoff Humanis, DARES and GreenIt).
We have summarized in this article the main levers to reduce its environmental impact in these new ways of working.
Teleworking and the environment: what is the observation?
Among the 25 million paid jobs in France, 13 million, or 46%, work in offices, and would therefore have teleworkable workstations - at least partially.
The secrets of the commute to and from work
The commute to and from work is the main source of greenhouse gas emissions from office activities.
Among those who travel to the office:
- 73% use the car;
- 16% take public transport;
- 7% work;
- and 4% drive two-wheelers (motorized or not).
According to the study, The trip represents an average of 50 minutes per day (practically twice as much in Île-de-France) and depending on the means of transport, it does not have the same impact.
In fact, while walking and cycling emit 0 grams of CO2 and the subway only 25 grams, the combustion car emits 1.9 kilograms.
The impact of teleworking on journeys
Since 2020, the start of the health crisis, teleworking has allowed a drop in the volume of trips of 69% And so an environmental impact reduced by 30%.
However, while this impact remains positive, it needs to be qualified. In fact, Teleworking does not prevent what are called “bounce effects” : additional travel, home relocation, use of videoconferencing, home energy consumption.
