Telework charter

A “remote work charter” is an internal document written by an organization or business to establish a set of guidelines, rules, rights, and responsibilities related to remote working or teleworking. This charter aims to clearly define expectations and standards for employees who perform their work outside of the traditional workplace, typically from home or other remote locations.

The telework charter may include the following elements:

  • Definition of remote work: A precise explanation of what the organization considers to be teleworking, including how often and under what conditions it can be done.
  • Eligibility: The criteria that determine which functions, teams, or employees are eligible to work from home, as well as the requirements for requesting this option.
  • Working conditions: The rules concerning working hours, availability, breaks, time management, and other aspects related to work organization.
  • Equipment and technology: The hardware, software, and resource access requirements needed to work remotely, including data security.
  • Communication and collaboration: Expectations for communication with the team and managers, online meetings, collaboration tools, etc.
  • Information Security: Guidelines on corporate data protection, secure storage, the use of VPNs (Virtual Private Network), etc.
  • Performance evaluation: Methods for evaluating the performance of remote employees, based on goals and results rather than physical presence in the office.
  • Rights and benefits: The benefits and rights of remote employees, such as reimbursement of expenses, paid time off, benefits, etc.
  • Revisions and adjustments: How the charter will be reviewed and updated over time to reflect the changing needs of the organization and employees.

The remote work charter is an essential tool for setting clear expectations and ensuring a positive and productive experience for remote employees, while meeting the needs and requirements of the business in terms of human resources management and data security. It should be communicated effectively to all employees involved and implemented in a fair and transparent manner.
